Factors associated with the dental fear Level and sub-factors of the dental fear survey scale

Abstract

|
Objective: The aim of this study was to analyze the factors related to level of dental fear and Sub-factors of DFS Scale.
Methods: Data were collected with self-administered questionnaires of 1590 persons, who above age 13 and below age 65 and had experience in visiting dental institutions from October to December, 2005. The collected data were analyzed by multiple regression analysis using SPSS program.
Results: ‘Level of dental fear’ were closely related to beliefs about dentists, frequence of visiting dental institutions for the recent one year, gender, direct painful experience. Factors which show a highly close relation with ‘level of avoidance behavior and physiologic arousal’ known as sub-factors of DFS scale, were found in order of frequence of visiting dental institutions for the recent one year, beliefs about dentists, self-reported oral disease symptoms, and direct painful experience. Factors which are closely concerned with ‘level of fear about specific objects(or situations)’ were found in order of beliefs about dentists, gender, direct painful experience, and frequence of visiting dental institutions for the recent one year.
Conclusions: Beliefs about dentists, gender and painful experience are strongly associated with level of dental fear and sub-factors of DFS scale. And dental fear was one of the main barrier to use of dental services. Therefore, to minimize degree of dental fear, first above all dental professionals need to take attitudes and roles giving credibilities to patients as well as to plan treatment and manage patients by referring to the dental care experience and considering patients’ gender.
